When should a laptop be cleaned?
Cleaning a laptop is necessary for two main reasons:
- preventive cleaning of a laptop - this type of prevention is recommended to be performed once a year in order to maintain the good technical condition of the laptop
- contaminated cooling system – as a result of ingress of dust, hair and tobacco smoke, the cooling of the laptop cannot maintain normal operating temperatures. This can lead to problematic operation of the laptop and cause irreversible damage to some elements.
How to find out if the laptop is dirty and heating up?
If the cooling system is not working properly, the following problems appear:
- poor air flow at the openings of the laptop - when dirt gets into the openings, they become clogged and prevent the warm air from being expelled outside
- loud noise from the rotation of the fan - when temperatures rise, the fan starts working at maximum speed
- delayed work on the laptop - the overall operation of the system visibly slows down
- shutdown or reboot on the laptop – this is a protective mechanism to prevent the electronic components of the laptop from burning
You can check the temperature of the processor and video card with one of the following programs:
- Speedfan – for Windows
- HWMonitor – for Windows
- Fan Control – for MAC
- iStat Menus – for MAC
Depending on what processor and video card your laptop has, the temperatures can be different, but within close limits.

How to clean a laptop?
Cleaning is done in several steps:
- disassembly - some models of laptops require their complete disassembly to reach the cooling elements. Others are equipped with service hole (lid) through which direct access is provided.
- cleaning – all dirt and dust are removed from the components of the laptop and its openings. Large particles are removed with a brush, and the rest are removed with compressed air.
- assembly – the parts are assembled and the laptop is returned to the state it was before
- testing – it is checked that everything works without problems, a test for stability and temperature anomalies is carried out
