Why is a reliable data archive important?

Cyber attacks are increasing every day globally. This trend of looking for security gaps in systems makes business organizations and the public sector look for adequate solutions to prevent data loss and critical outages in its systems.

However, losses caused by human intervention remain at the top of the charts and amount to billions of monetary units. In this ranking, in addition to cyber attacks and the human factor, there are also causes such as hardware failure, theft and natural disasters.

The picture in numbers

  • 9% do not know if they have experienced service interruption or data loss
  • 20% of the organizations reported that due to data loss they lost some of their customers
  • 42% of organizations reported experiencing data loss in the past year
  • 41% of organizations have lost their productivity and financial resources
  • 50% of the organizations that experienced data loss data went bankrupt in less than 10 days

Hacker communities have not yet moved to the use of the most modern technologies, such as AI, Quantum Computing, but use more familiar methods of attack.

For this reason, organizations do well to pay attention to the current state of their security and focus on using available defenses.

Back up, back up and back up

Statistics show that regardless of the size of the company, the main data protection is done by creating and following a strict backup and recovery plan for important data.

How often the data is actually backed up:

  • 20% backup data every month
  • 28% backup data every week
  • 26% backup data daily
  • 10% do not do backup at all

Even with regular backups of data, there is a high risk of data loss because the backup and recovery plan is not implemented properly. Here are possible reasons based on statistics:

  • 60% of all backups do not complete successfully
  • 50% of data recovery failed
  • 20% by professionals not following best practices

What needs to be done?

The implementation of basic and established protection methods will significantly reduce the potential risk of data loss. These include regular maintenance and prevention of software and hardware, updating operating systems, using anti-virus software, network protection, and following a strict data backup plan.

Regular data backup:

  • creating a schedule to perform regular backups of information and system configurations.

Isolate the backup copies from the systems being backed up:

  • this is extremely important, for example, in the presence of ransomware an attack where the virus destroys all copies that the system has access to.

Applying the 3-2-1 rule:

  • one of the best known practices is at least three copies located on at least two devices (media) and at least one copy with another location (remote office or cloud).

Testing the recovery process:

  • without it, no one can be sure that the backup is working properly.

Using integrated protection:

  • use information security systems such as managed firewalls, centralized anti-virus software and back up the entire perimeter, all devices and data.
